What is Tenuate?

Tenuate (diethylpropion) is a stimulant similar to an amphetamine. Diethylpropion is an appetite suppressant that affects the central nervous system.

It is used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity & Overweight. It is usually given after diet and exercise have been tried without success.

 

Precautions while using Tenuate Dospan

Your doctor must check your progress at regular visits to ensure that this medicine works correctly and does not cause any unwanted effects.

Do not use diethylpropion if you are using similar medicines such as benzphetamine, mazindol, phendimetrazine, phentermine, Bontril®, Didrex®, or Suprenza™. Also, do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor (MAOI) such as Eldepryl®, Marplan®, Nardil®, or Parnate® within the past 14 days. Using these medicines together may cause serious unwanted effects.

This medicine may be habit-forming. If you think this medicine is not working correctly after taking it for four weeks, do not increase the dose. Instead, check with your doctor.

Stop using this medicine and check with your doctor right away if you notice a decrease in your ability to exercise, if you faint, or if you have chest pain, swelling of your feet or lower legs, or trouble with breathing. These may be symptoms of a severe heart or lung problem.

This medicine may cause some people to become dizzy, lightheaded, or less alert than they usually are. Ensure you know how you react to this medicine before you drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or not alert.

This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants (medicines that make you drowsy or less alert). Some examples of CNS depressants are antihistamines or medicine for hay fever, other allergies, or colds; sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping medicine; prescription pain medicine or narcotics; medicine for seizures (such as barbiturates); muscle relaxants; or anesthetics, including some dental anesthetics. Check with your medical doctor or dentist before taking any of the above while taking this medicine.

 

How should I take Tenuate?

Take Tenuate precisely as prescribed. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or longer than recommended.

Diethylpropion may be habit-forming. Never share this medicine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it. Selling or giving away this medicine is against the law.

The immediate-release Tenuate tablet is usually taken three times a day before meals.

Tell your doctor if you do not lose at least 4 pounds after taking medicine for four weeks along with a low-calorie diet.

Tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Tenuate if you need surgery. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Do not stop using Tenuate suddenly after long-term use, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to stop using this medicine safely.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Keep track of your medicine. Diethylpropion is a drug of abuse, and you should be aware if anyone is misusing your medication or without a prescription.
