Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic commonly used to treat conditions like heart failure, hypertension, and edema. It works by blocking aldosterone, a hormone that causes the body to retain sodium and water, while helping to retain potassium. Spironolactone is also used to treat hyperaldosteronism and certain hormonal imbalances, such as in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and acne due to its anti-androgen properties.
