Sildenafil is a medication commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which work by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to specific areas of the body. For ED, sildenafil enhances blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal, leading to an erection. It is widely known under the brand name Viagra. When used for PAH, marketed as Revatio, sildenafil helps improve exercise capacity and delay disease progression by relaxing blood vessels in the lungs.
